On weekends, my friends would visit nearby villages, including Panbu village – it would take less than 2 hours to drive to the viewpoint from Homes, and it was a popular spot for townies to disappear at the time. 

Once school was over, and we decided to take a trip, my friends immediately suggested Panbu Dara Viewpoint. On my first trip to Panbu Dara, I was floored – the beautiful Kanchenjunga, the meandering Teesat river, the Coronation Bridge, and the dense forests made up the view. 

Since then, I have gone back four times – each time I fall in love with this lesser-known viewpoint, located 5500 feet above sea level. So, if you have been looking for an offbeat destination, then you can add Panbu Dara to your list!

How To Reach Panbu Dara From Darjeeling?

Wherever you are residing in the country or outside, it is most convenient to reach the NJP (New Jalpaiguri) station and hire a private or shared car to Darjeeling. If you are new to the area, you must spend at least two days in Darjeeling before visiting the surrounding regions. 

The first time I visited the Panbu Dara Viewpoint, I was floored by the mesmerizing views of tranquil villages, lush tea gardens, and the Kanchenjunga range. 

Moreover, this excellent offbeat spot is only a short drive from nearby cities in North Bengal. Yep! By road, Panbu Dara is 25 Kms from Darjeeling – it takes you 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach. 

You can rent a private car, which will cost between ₹2500 and ₹3000, or you can opt for a shared jeep. Personally, I have always opted for shared cars because they cost much less—approximately ₹500/person. So, you can easily book two seats for yourself and pay ₹1000 if you don’t want to sit too close to someone random – I’ve done it multiple times and it works! 

You will start from Darjeeling and cross Jorebungalow, Ghoom, 3rd Mile, and Lamahatta before reaching Panbu Dara. However, shared jeeps can only go to Lamahatta post, which you have to hike for the next 1 km uphill through prayer flags and pine forests to reach Panbu Dara.

Also, if you want to skip Darjeeling and reach the location directly from the NJP station or the Bagdogra Airport, it is possible. It will take you less than 2 hours by private car to travel the 38 km to the viewpoint. The expenses are similar or a little more. 

Are There Homestays Near Panbu Dara Viewpoint?

Yes. There are multiple homestays close to the Panbu Dara Viewpoint. In fact, you will find some of these homestays at the viewpoint, while some are located at Panbu, the nearby village. 

The best part? Options here range from homestays with standard rooms and shared bathrooms to comfortable villas with great views. Also, most homestays here serve home-cooked meals with local ingredients that taste delicious, especially during the winter months.

We stayed at Kavya Homestay at the viewpoint itself. This cozy homestay offers 360° views of the mountains and the surrounding beauty. Plus, it was super affordable, costing us only ₹1500/night for each room. 

Since I was sharing a room with a friend, I had to pay only ₹750 per night. The food was certainly a highlight of this homestay, and we were happy to indulge in the warm, home-cooked, local meals. And we had simply gotten their contact number on the internet and called them to book our rooms. 

So, you can dial +91 8826764206 and confirm your room. However, you will have to pay a 50% advance to confirm your booking. 

This is the closest homestay in the area. Apart from Kavya Homestay, I have a few other recommendations from the nearby area:

1. Lama Dara Homestay, Samether Khasmahal, is 11.1 kms away from the viewpoint, but it was my next best option. With a 4.2 rating on Google, you can definitely call them (095471 51001) to discuss room availability and pricing.

2. Located in the village of Panbu, Green Wood Homestay offers rooms that have large windows for guests to enjoy beautiful views. With a 4.5 rating on Google, you can check this place out if you love boutique cottages and serene stays. To call them, just dial 090647 47925. 

Are There Any Local Eateries Near Panbu Dara Viewpoint?

Much like Ahaldara Viewpoint, Panbu Dara is yet another offbeat location in North Bengal, and lacks any commercial restaurants or food courts. Moreover, the focus for such destinations is typically on the scenic natural setting. And building commercial restaurants will kill the vibe of such spots. 

As a result, you have to depend on simple (but delicious) homemade food served by homestays and local snack stalls. These snack stalls near the viewpoint serve wai wai, momos, tea, and coffee. Moreover, when you are here, try out the home-style curries, typically made with fresh vegetables and local ingredients.

Also, it is best to confirm your meals with the homestay you are staying at in advance. For instance, when we had the morning tea, I took the initiative to discuss the lunch and dinner options. 

If you want to have chicken curry or other non-veg items, then it’s best to inform your homestay in the morning. Otherwise, due to the remote location of the viewpoint, accessibility is low here, but informing earlier gives enough time to the homestay staff to prepare your food. 

Is Photography Allowed At Panbu Dara Viewpoint?

Yes, you can take a photo for personal reasons at the Panbu Dara Viewpoint and the surrounding region, including the homestays. 

However, for doing any commercial photography, you need a written permit from the relevant government authorities. In addition, it is possible that you might have to pay a certain fee. Also, while taking photos, be mindful of the local community and respect everyone’s privacy.

Since this time comes right after we bid adieu to monsoon, there’s hardly any rainfall and haze, making it perfect for capturing crisp details in the panoramic scenery. Moreover, the blue and golden hours around sunset and sunrise offer the softest, warmest lights for landscape pictures. 

While I always discourage people from visiting hilly regions during the monsoon, I have been to this region during July last year! Luckily, it was a safe trip – the one thing that stood out was all the pictures we took!

Yes. Generally, it is safe for families, couples, and solo travelers to visit Panbu Dara Viewpoint. Yep! It’s a tourist-friendly spot. Plus, as per recent news reports, the roads are clear.

However, you must avoid traveling to the region during the monsoon months – June to September. During the Monsoon, the area is prone to heavy rainfall and landslides. Moreover, while you are there, follow local rules to ensure an overall safe experience for everyone. 

On that note, I’ve laid out the four major safety issues that you should be aware of before visiting this region:

1. Landslides:

The entire Kalimpong District is very prone to heavy rainfall and landslides, particularly during the rainy months. During this time, roads are either submerged or blocked. So, it is best to avoid visiting the area during the monsoon.

2. Earthquakes:

While you think that earthquakes are rare, you will be shocked to know that the whole of Kalimpong district is located in the earthquake-prone seismic zone IV. So, it’s best to know how disaster management works in the region. If there’s an emergency, then follow the best practices of local emergency authorities.

3. Homestays:

If you are booking a homestay from an online platform, review all ther terms carefully before making any payments. The official website of Panbu Dara explicitly mentions that it is not accountable for any injury, damage, or loss incurred during your stay. 

4. Bad Roads:

The frequent flooding and landslides, thanks to the recent spate of unpredictable heavy rainfall, have only made the roads worse. So, while driving, be ready to encounter blockages, road closures, and potential detours. 

Visiting Panbu Dara Viewpoint? Best Travel Practices And Safety Tips:

Panbu Dara sure offers scenic views. But while you are visiting this viewpoint, take into account the rugged terrains, road conditions, and most importantly, the unpredictable weather. 

On that note, I’ve laid out some vital safety tips below (that have always kept me safe on mountains):

1. Always Keep Note Of The Weather:

Located in the Kalimpong region of West Bengal, Panbu Dara is a region prone to unpredictable weather conditions. Here, fluctuations are normal – a sunny day could easily become foggy in a matter of hours. 

So, it’s best to check the weather forecast before leaving your homestay – and be ready to face heavy rainfall, fog, or winds. Also, while visiting the viewpoint, it is likely that you will encounter heavy and freezing winds. So, be cautious when you are close to the edges and take care of your personal belongings. 

2. Carry Appropriate Footwear: 

This is literally true for all hilly areas – and Panbu Dara is no different! The terrain here is very uneven. 

And while you will spot stairs to reach the viewpoint, it’s hardly any good. This is why you need sturdy shoes that have a good grip. Your shoes are essential – without them, you can’t safely navigate this area. 

3. Supervise Kids:

If you are traveling with children, then don’t leave them alone anywhere – keep a close eye. This is especially applicable when you are close to the edges of the viewpoint due to its high elevation. 

4. Be Aware Of Your Surrounding Areas:

Again, this has always kept me safe in my solo trips! In crowded areas, hold onto your personal belongings – be vigilant about them and prevent theft. Moreover, when you are at the viewpoint, stay on the trail and avoid walking through any unmarked or steep slopes. 

Also, to be safe, consider going with a guide or a local driver, especially if you are not familiar with the region. That way, a local can make the trip more convenient, not to mention safer. 

5. Avoid Littering:

When you are traveling – especially to the mountains – avoid littering. Moreover, don’t dispose of your personal waste inappropriately in such areas. This will help to preserve the viewpoint’s natural beauty. Also, you could face fines for littering, so be careful.

Which Is The Best Time To Visit Ahaldara View Point?

The best time to visit Ahaldara is anytime between October and May. The weather is pleasant and clear, offering some of the best views of the surrounding region. 

Also, if you are looking forward to a nice winter in the hills, then plan your visit between December and February. However, do pack warm clothes since it tends to get really cold with temperatures falling to 5-6°C during daytime in January. 

In this context, it is also important to point out that you should avoid going to this viewpoint during the monsoon months. 

How To Reach Ahaldara From Darjeeling?

Wherever you are located in the country (or even outside), it is best to reach New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and take a car to Darjeeling. If you are not from anywhere close, I suggest spending at least two days in Darjeeling before visiting the surrounding regions, including Ahaldara.  

Located 45 to 50 kms from Darjeeling, Ahaldara is a perfect offbeat spot! The most convenient way to reach this beautiful location is by car. Yep! The best way to reach the location is by road – it will take you between 2 and 2.5 hours, depending on the conditions of the roads. 

You can either hire a private car, which will cost you ₹2500 – ₹3000, or you can go for a shared jeep. 

Personally, I have always opted to share a jeep since it costs much less – approximately ₹500/person. So, you can easily book two seats for yourself and pay ₹1000 if you don’t want to sit too close to someone random – I’ve done it multiple times and it works!

It is a beautiful journey that will take you through mountain bends, tea gardens, and pine forests. You will start from Darjeeling and cross Jorebungalow, Ghoom, and Latpanchar before reaching Ahaldara.

However, if you want to reach Ahaldara directly from NJP, then you can get a private car or shared taxi – it will take you 3 hours and cost you a little above 3K in a private car. But the rate for shared cabs will remain the same.  

Additionally, Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport, and it is 65 Kms away from Ahaldara – you can take a shared taxi or private cab from here as well.

Personally, I have been staying at homestays in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas, including the villages on the Sandakphu trail, for years. 

So, when we planned a trip to Ahaldara, we knew we were going to stay in homestays – the home-like, comforting environment always makes up for being a home away from our homes in the plains. 

Relatively offbeat till now, Ahaldara is yet to become a tourist hotspot buzzing with fancy boutique hotels. However, there are some homestays close to the viewpoint, mostly in the Sittong region, with different amenities like home-cooked meals, guided treks, and mountain views. 

Additionally, you will find options ranging from modern to traditional-style rooms with certain properties featuring useful amenities like attached toilets, hot water, and campfires. 

How Can I Book A Stay Near Ahaldara View Point?

For anxious and specifically first-time travelers, it is best to book homestays through online travel sites like Stayfar and FusionStays. 

On that note, I have mentioned three websites you can check out for accommodation in Ahaldara:

However, if you travel frequently like me, then it’s best to contact the homestay of your choice directly and book rooms. You can easily find contact details on hotel listing platforms like Justdial or directly from Google Business. 

If you are traveling during peak tourist seasons like Summer and Spring, it’s best to call and check if rooms are available. Also, if you are reserving a room directly, then you should be ready to pay a 50% advance to confirm your room. 

Additionally, you can also check Instagram. For example, I found Deoja Forest Stay on Instagram and sent them a message on the platform itself. We exchanged numbers, and I was able to reserve a room directly without any fuss or platform fee – it’s cheaper to book directly. 

Also, you can consider booking rooms in nearby areas such as Sittong or Latpanchar. That way, you can plan a visit to this beautiful viewpoint during sunset or sunrise. 

The Best Homestays Near Ahaldara View Point:

We stayed at Aahaldara Paradise Homestay. This homestay offers standard rooms and has its own barbecue area for cozy outdoor feasts. 

Plus, the views from the homestay were stunning. Also, I enjoyed the home-cooked meals at the homestay – you should definitely try the Chicken Curry here! Just dial 093828 95277 and book your room with them, if you are already convinced! 

Apart from my prime recommendation, there are two other good homestays near the viewpoint that you can definitely check out:

1. Sunrise Viewpoint Homestay, Aahaldara (4.7 Stars | 470+ Google Reviews) – ₹1350 to ₹1600/Night.
2. Humro Home Ahaldara (4.4 Stars | 827 Google Reviews) – prices can vary for direct bookings. 

What Wildlife Can Be Spotted Around Ahaldara View Point?

Since Ahaldara is located within the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, you will find different bird species and mammals. 

The most common sightings here include leopards, barking deer, wild boars, and black bears. If you are lucky, you can spot elusive animals like the Indian Bison and Royal Bengal Tiger. 

Moreover, this spot is a birdwatcher’s paradise, considering the region is home to more than 240 species, like the scarlet minivet, rufous-necked hornbill, and different woodpeckers and sunbirds.

Are There Any Local Eateries Near Ahaldara View Point?

Yes. Ahaldara is a calm, offbeat spot that doesn’t have any food courts or commercial restaurants. So, your entire dining experience will depend on what local homestays and shacks serve on a day-to-day basis. 

Near the viewpoint and close to the parking area, you will find small stalls and shacks that sell local snacks, tea, and candies. Being a momo person, I almost always indulge in momos at local shacks. Also, ditch Maggi and switch to Wai Wai when you are in the hills – these instant noodles are delicious. 

Moreover, the food you will get here will often feature locally-sourced and organic ingredients. For me, the taste of local and regional cuisines is always a priority. 

TBH, I read about a local pork curry called ‘Bongur ko Masu’, usually cooked with ‘Rai’ leaves (a local leafy veggie) on Tripadvisor. So, when I reached Ahaldara, I made it a point to try this out – the best part? Just enquire at the reception of your homestay, and you can get it made for dinner.

Not really. 

Generally, I avoid traveling to the mountains during the monsoon, though I find Darjeeling very beautiful during the rainy months. But the recent surge in landslides and the subsequent road closures have made it a complete no-no to travel to these regions. 

Moreover, you can hardly experience the viewpoint in its entirety during the monsoon since everything around you will be lost in the low-hanging clouds and fog. So, even if the landscape is scenic and lush in the monsoon, the overall experience is usually impacted negatively by the rainy weather.

• Landslides: Heavy rainfall in Darjeeling and adjoining hilly areas causes landslides and makes the travel routes inaccessible. 

• Road Closures: The roads are too dangerous to navigate due to heavy rains and unpredictable landslides. This is particularly true for spots like Ahaldara that are located on hilltops. 

• Obscure Views: This one’s perhaps the most heartbreaking issue. The fog and clouds end up hiding the entire Kanchenjunga range, including the surrounding mountains. 

• Lack Of Tourist Activities: If the weather is not good, then it will end up limiting outdoor activities in the region. Moreover, the main attraction here is the panoramic view, which is most likely hidden behind the clouds.

When you are traveling to the mountains, it is always crucial to be safe and respectful – if you don’t respect nature, nature will surely show you why it is imperative to do so. And I’m not even kidding – never joke about safety when it comes to mountains and adjoining hilly areas. 

Darjeeling, and in this case specifically Ahaldara, is no different. In this context, I have laid down some vital safety tips below:

1. Be Mentally Prepared About The Roads:

The roads, including the trails, are going to be narrow. So, it’s not going to be a comfortable ride entirely – it’s best to be ready for a bumpy ride to the viewpoint. 

2. Carry Appropriate Footwear:

Please don’t make the mistake of carrying your regular footwear to the hills. For starters, ditch all open-toe shoes, including sandals and flip flops. Any shoes you wear here have to be covered – you need shoes that are strong to withstand bad roads. 

3. Carry Your Essentials:

There are a few shops in this area. As a result, it is better that you carry your own snacks, medicines, and anything else that you might need during your stay. 

4. Carry Cash:

Ahaldara View Point is a cash-only establishment. As a result, you won’t find any facilities for debit, credit, or other digital payments. In this context, it is vital to remember that there is limited connectivity – only Jio, BSNL, and sometimes Airtel have network coverage. So, don’t depend a lot on digital payments. 

4. Avoid Traveling At Night:

Generally, the area is safe during the day. But at night, it is best to avoid isolated stretches. In fact, we stayed in after 6 PM every day. Moreover, if you have been to hilly areas, you already know that night falls faster, and people turn in for the day faster.

The cost for Shillong to Dwaki taxis will be INR 200 to 400 per person, and from Dwaki to Shnongpdeng (8 km), the cab/car prices are between INR 2000 and 4000 based on the type of vehicle you choose. 

Furthermore, you can take a direct taxi to Shnongpdeng from Shillong. The distance between Shillong and Shnongpdeng is 90 km. The journey by road takes 3-4 hours, and the taxi price is approximately INR 4000.

How To Reach The Netravati Peak Base And Where To Stay?

The Netravati Peak trek starts from Samse. However, you have to reach Samse from Bangalore via Kalasa. 

You can book a Bangalore to Kalasa ticket from the KSRTC Website. From Kalasa, you can board a bus plying to Karkala or Udupi and get down at Samse. 

From Samse, you will need to take a shared jeep ride to the trek base. The jeep ride will cost you INR 250. 

However, if you are in a private vehicle, you can reach Kalasa via Hassan, Mudigere and Kottigehara. From there, drive to Samse and take the left front to reach the forest checkpoint. 

Alternative Route From Mangalore 

The Mangalore International Airport is the closest to the Netravati Peak base. The distance is 86 km, and you can take a private car from there and reach the base after 3-4 hours of journey. 

Stay Options

Camping is not allowed on Netravati Peak or the trail, which is a part of the Kudremukh National Park. You have to return to Samse to find overnight accommodations in Airbnbs and homestays.

The Panama City Beach Tourist Development Council has confirmed that there have been fewer summer visitors to Panama City Beach compared to 2024. So, thanks to the tourism taxes, Panama City Beach and the areas around Florida 30 A are having a softer tourism year in 2025. 

Moreover, the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport has mentioned a 3% drop in passenger traffic in 2025.
