Ramanuja was one of the great scholars of the Vishishta Advaita school of Vaishnavism. This 11th-century scholar and philosopher also strived hard to bring social integration. 

Some of us identify him as a “compassionate philosopher,” or some of us may call him a social reformer or an important name in the Bhakti Movement. 

Furthermore, the words of Dr Prema Nandkumar published in The Hindu give us a better understanding of why Ramanuja is the chosen one of the “Statue of Equality.” 

Dr Nandkumar quoted from the Sages of India, Colombo to Almora Lectures by Swami Vivekananda. 

“He (Ramanuja) felt for the downtrodden, he sympathised with them. He took up the ceremonies, the accretions that had gathered, made them pure so far as they could be, and instituted new ceremonies, new methods of worship, for the people who absolutely required them. 

At the same time, he opened the door to the highest spiritual worship from the Brahmin to the Pariah. That was Ramanuja’s work. 

That work rolled on, invaded the North, was taken up by some great leaders there; but that was much later, during the Mohammedan rule, and the brightest of these prophets of comparatively modern times in the North was Chaitanya.”

The Katra to Chenab Bridge distance is around 66 km. You have to take the Vande Bharat Express (26401) from Katra to Srinagar to reach the bridge. 

It is a 3-hour train ride. The tickets for the Katra to Srinagar journey cost ₹715 for the AC Chair Car and ₹ 1320 for the Executive Chair Car. 

The train departs from Katra (SHMATA VD KATRA) at 8:10 AM and reaches Srinagar at 11:08 AM. You can board the train 6 days a week, and it does not run on Tuesdays. 

Again, the return train (Vande Bharat 26402) from Srinagar to Katra starts from Srinagar at 2 PM and reaches Katra at 4:58 PM.

Subhas is Gone!

Within a blink, Subhas indeed vanishes into an 80-feet-long pit at Guna Cave. Remember this scene from the 2024 Hit Movie Manjummel Boys? 

The movie, based on a true incident at Guna Cave in 2006, was also the center of attention at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI). 

Fortunately, Siju David and other friends of Subhash, or the Manjummel Boys, made the impossible happen. 

How they convinced the Police, Forest Department, and other authorities to operate the rescue operation and how Siju David himself went into the pit to bring back Subhas tells a story of friendship, unconditional love, and human resilience. 

Guna Cave was previously known as Devil’s Kitchen, and it received its name from the Kanmani Anbodu song of the Kamal Haasan Blockbuster Gunaa, which was shot here. 

You can see Guna Cave after a short walk through pine forests. Grass and shola trees cover the entire cave area. 

The twisted and gnarled roots of the trees here create a sense of intrigue. You know, I was watching the movie, and when I found the patterns created by the roots, I found them very eerie. 

I could visualize people making circles around these roots and practicing the occult after the Sun goes down. Indeed, there are stories about local tribes performing certain rituals at the cave, making the intrigue around the place deeper.

The scene where Subhas asks Siju David, “Who are You?” and grabs his throat almost looks like the evil personified in action. I had my heart in my mouth for a moment.

Do you know what is the mystery behind Guna Cave? The cave is home to countless bats, which are associated with darkness and evil.

So, the name must have come from there. Also, at least 16 people have died in the Guna Cave, creating a strong belief that people who once fall inside the cave or any pit there will be devoured by the evil and never return. 

Many people also associate the name “Devil’s Kitchen” with the myth of the Pandavas cooking their meals here. However, this version fails to justify the origin of the ‘devil’ part in the name. 

Also, the nearby Pillar Rocks often have a veil of mist, creating a sense of mystery. 

When The Manjummel Boy Director Sensed Death At The Devil’s Kitchen

The team from Manjummel Boys recently released a behind-the-scenes video to celebrate the one-year completion of the film. The video demonstrates the challenges of shooting at Guna Cave despite the use of advanced technology. 

Ultimately, Ajayan Chalissery, the production designer, had to recreate the entire cave. 

Also, in that video, Chidambaram, the writer-director of Manjummel Boys, said that it was death that welcomed them to Guna Cave.

“The first thing that greeted us in the cave was death,” says Chidambaram. “When I descended to the mouth of the cave strenuously and saw the pit he (Sreenath Bhasi’s character Subash) slipped in, it was a monkey’s skull that welcomed us. The smell there was such. I could see and smell rocks deprived of sunlight for years. When I saw all these, I realized it’s impossible to shoot there.

Unlike that film, though, our film takes place entirely in the Guna cave, and even if we did get to shoot it in the caves, it has to be in such a way that we have to be in control of the process. So we realized that the only way to do it is to recreate the Guna caves.“

Guna Cave Incident 2006: The Story Behind The Movie Manjummel Boys

The Manjummel Boys Guna Cave incident occurred in 2006, when a group of 11 friends from Manjummel, near Kochi, decided to go on a trip to Kodaikanal. They had plans for a trip to Goa initially, and that did not work out.

Nevertheless, after they visited Kodaikanal, one member of the group suggested that they should explore the Guna Cave, which had become a popular site due to the Kamal Haasan blockbuster, Gunaa. 

However, the over-enthusiastic group of boys wanted to go deeper into the caves. While exploring the Devil’s Kitchen, Subhas, one of those eleven boys, fell into a pit suddenly. 

It was a moment of blink and vanish for all the other boys in the group. 

Clueless, the boys approached the Tamil Nadu Police, got beaten by them, and somehow managed to convince the forest department and other concerned authorities to rescue Subhash. 

However, nobody was willing to go inside the pit, and Subhas’s friend, Siju David, volunteered to take on the task of rescuing Subhas. 

Both of them returned alive from the pit. 

This is the story of the 2024 movie Manjummel Boys, which has created such a ripple that the Tamil Nadu government has initiated an investigation into the Police behavior of the real Manjummel Boys in 2006. 

A Guna Cave Fall Incident Again Happened In 2012

In 2012, Karthik fell into a 300-foot-deep gorge of Guna Cave while trying to retrieve his shoes. He was at the Guna Cave for a picnic trip with six friends. 

The fire rescue personnel and the police department launched an operation to rescue Karthik, as reported by the Press Trust of India in 2012.

Guna Cave is around 8.5 km away from Kodaikanal. You can travel the distance by bus or book a car.

So, What Happened In Pahalgam? 

There is an attack in Pahalgam, just 50 km away from the city of Srinagar, the Summer Capital of Jammu. 

Armed men in camouflage clothes “opened indiscriminate fire at Baisaran meadow, a scenic uphill area accessible only by foot or pony rides.” 

This resulted in the death of 26 tourists, and most of them were civilians. Also, Lt Vinay Narwal, a naval officer who was on his honeymoon, lost his life in the attack. 

Our heart bleeds to see the video clips of his newly married bride, Himanshi, choking in tears at the coffin of her husband. 

Furthemore, one Nepalese tourist was killed in this attack. Additionally, one employee of the Inteligence Bureau was the victim of this attack.

Is The Pahalgam Attack A Violent Response To Article 370 Abrogation?

Two local men, identified as Ahsan (Pulwama) and Adil Guri (Anantnag), were part of the six-member terrorist group attacking the tourists. 

Further, “The Resistance Front” (TRF), a branch of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, has issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack. 

Now, beyond this apparent “Whodunit” scene, this attack seems to be an attack on the abrogation of Article 370 in the Indian Constitution.

In response to the terrorist attack in Baisaran, the “Mini Switzerland of India,” PM Modi said that crores of citizens in the country, from Kargil to Kanyakumari, are in deep rage and sorrow.

He has also thanked the people and leaders of other countries who have stood by India in these hard times. Furthermore, he prayed for a speedy recovery of the people who were injured in the attack and are now being treated at hospitals. 

Additionally, he called the act of terrorism an attack on the spirit of India, and India will not spare these terrorists and their backers. He said, “We will pursue them to the ends of the earth.”

Along with the war cry from PM Modi against terrorism, a raft of measures taken by India against Pakistan show how the government and the nation react to this attack.

Measures Taken By India Against Pakistan After The Terrorist Attack

• There has been an immediate suspension of the “Indus Water Treaty 1960,” and the treaty will remain suspended until “Pakistan credibly and irrevocably stops support for cross-border terrorism.”
• The closure of the Attari Post on Wednesday. 
• Withdrawal of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani Nationals traveling to India. Also, any Pakistani tourist in India with the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme has to leave India within 48 hours. 
• India calls the defense, air force, and naval officials in the Pakistani High Commission in Delhi “Persona Non Grata,” and they are ordered to leave within 1 week. India will also withdraw their defense officials from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. 
• Moreover, India will reduce the High Commission strength to 30 from 55 by May 1st. 
• Visa services to Pakistani nationals have been suspended immediately, and every Pakistani National has to leave India by 27th April 2025. Only the persons with medical issues can stay here till 29th April, 2025. 
• The Border Security Force (BSF) has said that provocation and peace cannot coexist. So, the ceremonial display will be scaled down at Hussainiwala, Sadki, and Attari Borders.
• There will be no handshakes between the Indian and Pakistani Guard Commanders. Also, the gates will remain closed. 

How Pakistan Reacts To The Indian Government Measures After The Pahalgam Attack

Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif called this terrorist attack a “hoax” and said that it had been “orchestrated.” 

Calling it a “False Flag Operation,” he also referred to it as an incident similar to the Pulwama attacks, which were orchestrated, as admitted by the Indian Media.

Further, as a consequence of the measures taken by India after the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan has shut its airspace and cut trade ties with India. 

Additionally, Pakistan will consider the measures to stop the Indus Water, “An Act of War.”

However, in this scenario, the United Nations has asked both countries to exercise maximum restraint.

“Terrorist attacks and violent civil unrest are possible in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Do not travel to this state (with the exception of visits to the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh). Violence happens sporadically in this area and is common along the Line of Control (LOC) between India and Pakistan. It also occurs in tourist spots in the Kashmir Valley: Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam.”

We should rest these questions for now. Traveling is not a consideration for now, as Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and the entire country fight against terrorism.

However, we know things will get better soon, as India has always fought back and we have overcome incidents such as the Pulwama Attack of 2019 and the Kargil War of 1999. 

Having said that, these acts of terrorism and wars leave long-lasting impacts on humanity. Nobody keeps a count of the lost lives, money, and resources once the war is over. 

So, Pahalgam and the entire Jammu and Kashmir will be back on our dream travel destination bucket list.

And you know it was right of me not to write anything about Mayong without knowing the complete picture. Why? 

As I write this article, I see that the government of Assam has taken action against influencer Abhishek Kar for how he said that women of Mayong can transform men into goats.

You can still find the video on YouTube. However, this kind of statement can spread misinformation or unnecessary fear. 

Having said that, the village of Mayong has a lot of stories to tell, and there is a reason why people call it the Black Magic Capital of India. 

Also, Mayong grabbed all the attention by hosting the “Mayong Indrajal Magic Festival” on 18th August 2024.

The Department of Tourism, Government of Assam, has highlighted Mayong Village for its unique rural charm. 

Home to 120 witch doctors and wizards (locally known as Bej or Oja), the Hogwarts of India is around 35 km east of Guwahati, and it is located in the Morigaon district of Assam. 

Mayong is also close to the Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

Mayong Village History: Stories And Mysteries Do Not End

The traditions and mystical practices of Mayong Village go back to the Stone Age, as confirmed by archeological experts. However, the Bongsawali Goid manuscript says that King Sunyat Singha from Maibong founded Mayong in 1624 AD. 

Further, there are many other versions of Mayong’s history and myths around it. 

• Many say that the land of whispered secrets and its association with sorcery and witchcraft go back hundreds of years. It was a part of the Ahom Kingdom that ruled Assam. 

• Also, the name Mayong comes from the Sanskrit word, Maya, which means illusion or trick. 

• However, many claim that Mayong is named after Miyong, a Dimasa word that means elephant. 

• Furthermore, many say that the word Mayong came from Mahamaya, as Devi Sati’s body part fell during the Shiva Tandava. 

• In addition, Mairang means rice in Kachari language and Mayong on the banks of the river Brahmaputra is rich in paddy production. 

• The British wanted to suppress the local customs of Mayong during the 19th-century colonial rule. However, the villagers preserved their cultural heritage. 

• Moreover, Mayang is mentioned in the Mahabharata. It is said that Ghatotkacha, the son of Bheema, gained his power from the people of Mayong. 

• There is also a story of the disappearance of around 100000 soldiers from Muhammad Shah’s army in 1337 in Mayong.

Historian Mirza Mohammad Qasim mentioned Mayong Village in his Alamgiri Nama. He wrote that during the battle between the Ahom kingdom and the Mughals, Ram Singh, the Mughal leader, was scared of the black magic of Mayong Village. 

Mayong Black Magic History

The Mayong black magic history goes back to time immemorial. For generations, the Oja or Bej community has been practicing the Su Mantra, or Good Tantr, and Ku Mantra, or Bad Tantra. 

An Oja or Bej today mainly use their magic to cure diseases like measles and pneumonia. Having said that, black magic in Mayong has evolved a lot. 

You can visit the Mayong Central Museum and Emporium of Black Magic and Witchcraft, where you will find many artifacts, relics of magical practices, jewelry made from bones, manuscripts, and weapons. 

Other places to visit to learn about the history of black magic in Mayong are the Ganesha Temple of Hatigarh, Shiva Than at Kachasila, and Vishnu Temple of Kajolichauki. 

Moreover, according to Assamese folklore and popular beliefs, the history of black magic in Mayong has roots in Tantric practices and the worship of Goddess Shakti. The worship of Goddess Shakti further included human sacrifices or Narbali. 

Even today, when you talk to the elderly of the village, they will tell you some fascinating stories about the history of black magic in Mayong. 

Powered by Sadhana and Tantra, many wizards of Mayong used to exploit ghosts and evil spirits to kill animals and people. They even used to shoot invisible arrows to harm someone physically. 

Furthermore, the sorcerers used to chant mantras and collect hair, clothes, and nails to cast a spell on people. In addition, they used puppets dressed in the clothes and shoes of the victim to cause immense trouble. 

The spell of the Mayong wizards was so powerful that only a special ritual at the Kamakhya Temple could remove it.

For a few days, I have been keeping a close watch on the changing weather conditions. 

The La Nina effect is a concern this season, and various updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) can be confusing (Updates in the next section). (The latest update is of heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi on 11th and 12th December 2024.)

So, this time, making up my mind about where to travel in India during winter is difficult.

But, for years, these winter months of December to February have been my favorite part of the year for traveling. I prefer to visit hill stations in India like Auli, Shimla, Darjeeling, and Gangtok in winter for the snowy wonder and festive fun. 

However, you also have Goa, Pondicherry, and other hotspots in South India if you want to beat the chill. The average winter temperature in South India in December and throughout the winter remains between 18-30 degrees Celsius.

During the same months, various parts of North India experience a temperature of 2-18 degrees Celsius temperature. However, in higher altitudes, the temperature, of course, dips down to zero and sub-zero, causing snowfall. 

Further, during winter, Eastern India has an average temperature of 16-17 degrees Celsius and in the western part, the same ranges between 20-25 degrees Celsius.

As I pen this article, I hear about the chances of at least a 3-degree Celsius temperature dip in northwest India. Also, very soon, Delhi and various parts of Chandigarh and Haryana will have dense fog.

So, if you are traveling to these parts of the country now, you need to exercise utmost caution. 

Moreover, thanks to the La Nina effect, IMD predicts freezing temperatures and increased rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. In addition, a western disturbance will bring more snow to the hill stations in northern India.

So, despite hill stations and snowy peaks being the first choice for winter holidays in India, this time, you need to really reconsider your winter vacation plan. In the upcoming sections, I will discuss the places you must visit and avoid this winter.
