In fact, when I visited the 25th edition of the Hornbill Festival in 2024, I understood why Gary Mehigan, in his NatGeoIndia video, has called the Hornbill Festival “One of the most action-packed mega festivals.”

He also said that it is a “celebration that brings Nagaland’s past and present together.” Indeed, from Naga wrestling, archery shows, and tribal music acts to the Rock Concern or the “Ticket to Hornbill,” it is a wholesome cultural extravaganza. 

Moreover, the Hornbill Festival has recently bagged the Silver Banyan Award for Best Cultural Music & Dance by THE WEEK Heritage Awards. Gajendra Singh Shekawat, the Union Minister of Culture & Tourism, handed over this award in New Delhi.

When Is The Hornbill Festival 2025?

Like every year, the Hornbill Festival 2025 will also take place from 1st to 10th December.

Along with the local artists and artists from various parts of India, performers from Japan, Nepal, Israel, South Korea, Scotland, and Ireland will participate in this edition of the festival. 

And the best thing about this edition? Drum Tao is back! They were like out of the world in the 2024 edition, and I can never explain how it felt.

The Hornbill Festival will take place at the Kisama Heritage Village. The day sessions at the Kisama Heritage Village are a celebration of the Naga Heritage. Here, the local tribes take part in dances, songs, and traditional games. 

Furthermore, the music sessions from 5 PM to 10 PM feature local, national, and international performers. 

With the stage set for this grand cultural event of Nagaland, Theja Meru has made a plea. He has said,

The Dimapur Railway Station and the Dimapur Airport are the gateway to the Kisama Heritage Village. The railway station is around 83 km away, and the travel time by local transport is a little over 3 hours. 

Also, the Dimapur Airport is about 78 km from the Kisama Heritage Village, with a travel time of about 2 hours and 30 minutes. 

Moreover, the Kisama Heritage Village is just 12 km from the Kohima HQ. You can take a taxi service from Kohima HQ to the Hornbill Festival Venue. 

For me, traveling to the event venue was all the more fun as I joined a group of riders near the Kohima HQ and biked the remaining route.

Also, for the first time, the Nagaland Choir Games will be a part of the Hornbill Festival celebration this year. It will take place at the Capital Cultural Hall of Kohima on 8th and 9th December 2025. 

Neiphiu Rio, the chief minister of the state, has envisioned this program, and here choirs from all 17 districts will take part. 

In addition, the sensation of the last year, Drum Tao, a Japanese percussionist troupe, will come back this season. Moreover, there will be an “interesting collaboration” with the Southeast Asian band, Mongdol.

The weather during the Hornbill Festival remains chilly. The temperature remains around 5 to 15 degrees Celsius. The temperature drops significantly after sundown.

The Hornbill Festival is an economic driver and an endeavor to promote and preserve the culture of Nagaland. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) published a report, “Waste Not, Celebrate More: The 25th Hornbill Festival Paves the Way for Sustainability!”

The report, shared on 11th December 2024, highlighted that the Hornbill Festival was free of Zero-Waste and single-use plastic (SUP). Despite footfall increasing by more than 30% in 2023, the festival remained eco-friendly through its sustainable practices. 

Here are more details on how Hornbill Festival prioritizes sustainability and creates local impact by building a circular economy.

1. Hygiene And Sanitation Efforts

During the festival, 42 toilet stalls were set up in the heritage village. Six of them were in public locations, and 36 were in the food area or the Morung. 

Furthermore, hygienic conditions were maintained in these washrooms with regular maintenance and cleaning. 

2. Creating A Blueprint For Sustainable Events

The 25th Hornbill Festival not only promised but also executed a zero-wastage event. Thus, it emerged as a role model for large-scale sustainable events. 

3. Important Environmental Gains

The environmental gains of the event were massive. Especially with the ban on single-use plastics, at least 1 lakh single-use plastics could be prevented. As a result, CO2 emissions decreased by 50 metric tons. 

Thus, the event’s carbon footprint decreased, and emissions of Greenhouse gases such as ethylene and methane decreased. 

4. Circular Economy

Due to the ban on single-use plastics, the use of locally sourced sustainable materials went up at the Hornbill Festival 2024. Also, the following reusable materials were recycled.

• Paper

As a result, the principle of a circular economy was set. With the use of recycled materials and resources in the production cycle, energy and resources will be preserved. 

5. The Approach To Eliminate SUP

The festival authority adopted the following multi-faceted approach to completely eliminate the use of single-use plastics.

• Visitor Education
• Regulatory Enforcement

Furthermore, SUPs were replaced by the following elements. 

• Paper Bags
• Bagasse Cullery
• Bamboo Straws
• Leaf-Based Plates

6. Waste Management

Strategic placement of bins, waste sorting stations, and authorized recycling centers played a crucial role in the waste management at the Hornbill Festival. 

Furthermore, waste was composted on-site, and the compost was distributed among local agricultural fields and gardens.

The 2025 Hornbill Festival is going to become more accessible. There will be support systems such as a “Disability Help Desk” from the Public Works Department (PwD). In addition, you will get many private bus options on platforms such as redBus. Here, you can travel from Delhi to Kainchi Dham in 6 hours and 30 minutes to 7 hours and 30 minutes, and the ticket price starts from INR 411. 

Traveling Delhi To Neem Karoli Baba Distance By Car

Traveling from Delhi to Neem Karoli Baba Kainchi Ashram is not just about covering a 339 km journey. Also, remember that the temple is located at an elevation of 1400 meters. 

You can book a car for this long journey, based on the type of vehicle (Hatchback, sedan, SUV, and MUV) you choose, the car rental price for a one-way journey will be around INR 4500 to 6000. 

Luxury car rentals such as BMW, Audi, and Volvo are also available from Delhi to Kainchi Dham. 

Traveling From Delhi To Neem Karoli Baba Temple By Air 

Pantnagar Airport is the nearest to the Neem Karoli Baba Kainchi Dham. The distance is around 70 km.

Kainchi Temple remains open throughout the year. However, if you want to attend the Pranpratistha Diwas and the biggest Bhandara at the temple, you must plan a visit on 15th June. The temple remains crowded on that day, but every ritual is observed in an organized way. 

15th June is also the day on which a temple and a statue of Neem Karoli Baba were consecrated in 1976. He left for the heavenly abode on 10th September, 1973. 

The temperature in June is quite pleasant in Kainchi Dham, and it hovers around 15-30 degrees Celsius.

15th June Bhandara is the biggest festival celebrated in Kainchi Mandir. It celebrates the occasion of the consecration or Pran Pratishta of the many temples in Kainchi Mandir. 

On that day, a special puja is performed in the morning, and then malpua, halwa, and sabzi are distributed in this large community feast. 

Other occasions on which Bhandara is organized are: 

• Punya Tithi of Shree Siddhi Maa: 28th December
• Anant Chaturdashi
• Guru Purnima
• Navratri
• Sharad Poornima

Furthermore, on the occasion of 15th June, the temple management offers free shuttle transport from Bhowali to Kainchi Mandir. Also, the temple hours are extended on that day. 

The management also set up water stations throughout the premises, and police and volunteers remain present to guide you. 

Kainchi Dham Donation/Seva

There is no donation or seva facility for Kainchi Dham online, not through its official website. Shree Kainchi Mandir Trust or any other media. 

You can only give donations in the donation boxes in the temple. Otherwise, you can pay the amount at the office and get a receipt from the office or reception. 

The Kainchi Mandir administration looks after any Yagna, Puja, or special offerings in the temple. In addition, there is no provision for booking any room online or offline.

Yes, you can stay overnight in Kainchi Dham Ashram. However, the rooms are limited and they come with basic amenities. Also, remember that staying in these rooms is free. So, you don’t need to make any online or offline payment. 

The existing rooms here are mostly for the workers and sewaks, and now the temple trust is looking for options outside the temple premises to offer accommodation for the devotees. 

It is best to get in touch with the temple office physically and check the availability of rooms. Also, you can get in touch with the temple authority via the social media pages.

You must not blindly believe the news and updates circulating on social media. There is no custom or tradition of collecting a little amount of water from the sacred Kshipra River or soil from the Ashram. In fact, it is a practice you need to avoid for environmental reasons. 

Furthermore, there is no prescribed practice for offering any form of tabeez, talisman, blankets, or dhotis in the Kainchi Ashram. Also, the ashram does not offer any Ayurvedic treatment, Yogasanas, healing, or meditation services. 

Kainchi Ashram Visit Guidelines 

• Use of mobile phones, photography, and videography is not allowed in the temple. 

• You must not feed the monkeys here to ensure the safety of the devotees and residents here. 

• You cannot bring pets, firearms, or ammunition to the temple. 

• The Ashram area is not open to visitors. It is for sewaks and residents.

• You cannot enter the temple after eating non-vegetarian food or after consuming tobacco and alcohol. 

• You must not litter and use the dustbins placed across the temple area.

Some other trains plying between New Delhi and New Jalpaiguri are Tripura Sundari (14620), Mahananda Express (15484), Brahmaputra Mail (15657), etc. 

In addition, the train journey will typically take you nearly 24 to 26 hours. Also, you can easily book train tickets via the official IRCTC mobile app or website. It is vital to book your tickets well in advance, especially if you are going to Darjeeling during peak tourist season, that is, Summer and Autumn.

So, the major airlines all have direct flights between Bagdogra and Delhi, including Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and GoAir. But if you ask me, always go for Indigo – and nothing else. It will take you 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach Bagdogra. 

While booking yout flight, please do so well in advance since the prices tend to fluctuate a lot, especially during peak seasons. Also, prices tend to vary – from ₹4,500 to ₹8,000 – for one-way tickets. 

How To Reach Darjeeling From Bagdogra Airport?

On that note, let’s look at the major stops between Delhi and Darjeeling:

1. Alwar:

Located in Rajasthan, Alwar is famous for its architectural marvels and rich history. The beautiful city is home to the Alwar City Palace, a must-visit palace built in 1793 that blends architectural styles. 

Moreover, the Palace has a museum inside – you can stop by and spend time looking at precious manuscripts. In addition, you will find the Moosi Maharani Chhatri shrine nearby – the shrine is decorated with sandstone and marble.

Roughly translated, this Sanskrit sloka means that then there was neither non-existence nor existence. There was no air or sky beyond. Then, what covered it? And where and by whose protection was this unfathomable water?

Now, I find this sloka about the beginning of the universe very relevant while describing the landscape of spiritual tourism in India. It is hard to predict how this land came to be associated with spiritual practices and the attainment of pure consciousness. 

Also, some people in India, coming from the most unassuming places, have transformed the lives of other people with their spiritual knowledge and presence. Neem Karoli Baba is one such persona who has showered unconditional love and blessings on countless devotees. 

He is more significant as a spiritual leader because his teachings, “Sub Ek,” resonate with the concept of oneness or inclusivity in the Hindu philosophy. I have been most fortunate to visit the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram, Kainchi Dham, and it was an experience beyond words. 

You cannot explain the goosebumps you feel, or when a moment of consciousness strikes you like a thunderbolt. Can you?

In a recent interview with Just Too Filmy, Manoj Bajpayee said how he and director Raam Reddy felt the magic and received the much-needed inspiration at the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram in Kainchi Dham before the filming of their movie, Jugnuma (The Fable). 

However, it is not Manoj Bajpayee alone. Neem Karoli Baba and his spiritual magificence have touched many prominent names from different fields, such as Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli, Julia Roberts, Harvard Professor and psychologist Ram Dass, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs. 

Even V.V. Giri, the former president of India, was a great devotee of Neem Karoli Baba. 

Simplicity and mindfulness! These are the two common factors that all these devotees have claimed have changed their lives. 

And such is his aura and miraculous power that even today, popular spiritual leaders, such as Krishna Das, the Grammy Award Nominee, talk about him on popular podcasts, Beerbiceps, and he said that the presence of Neem Karoli Baba was always awe-inspiring, and what was happening before was beyond grasp. 

How Lakshmi Narayan Sharma Of Akbarpur Became Neem Karoli Baba?

Born in a wealthy zamindar family as Lakshmi Narayan Sharma, Neem Karoli Baba, left his home at the age of 12 and returned after a gap of 10-12 years. 

After spending days in temple services and Sadhanas in Rajasthan, Rajkot, and Morbi District of Gujarat, he reached the Neeb Karori village in the Farrukhabad district. 

The villagers respected him for his divine speech and for how his words always came true. They built an underground cave and later another, as an extension of the first. He then built a Hanuman Temple at the top of this cave, and he used to remain immersed in his Sadhana throughout the day.   

After the new cave was built, he began living with the villagers as one of their own. However, he continued to show his divine tricks while playing hide and seek with little kids or swimming in the pond. 

He has also been associated with stories such as being present at two places at the same time and putting his devotees into a state of god consciousness with a single touch. 

Nevertheless, from his days in the Neeb Karori village, he became known as Neem Karoli or Neem Karori Baba. Devotees believe that Neem Karoli Baba was Lord Hanuman himself, born as a human. 

The Famous Encounter Of Ram Dass And Neem Karoli Baba

“The next message you need is always right where you are.”

– Ram Dass, Author, Spiritual Leader, Psychologist, and Harvard Professor. 

I learned about the association of Ram Dass from a video of another renowned mystic, Sadguru. He said that the best thing Ram Dass did was getting associated with Neem Karoli Baba. 

Now, when Ram Dass visited Neem Karoli Baba, he was a Harvard Professor and an expert psychologist in mental health issues and how LSDs and other drugs help in these situations. 

Maharaj Ji said that these drugs and all are of no use in treating depression, and Ram Dass gave him the pills with strong LSDs, and only a small portion of those pills are used for treating depression.

However, Baba Neem Karoli popped two pills and remained unaffected. This is one of the most miraculous incidents or stories around him.  

How I Felt At Neem Karoli Baba Mandir, Kainchi?

The name Kainchi Dham comes from the hand gesture Baba Neem Karoli or Maharaj Ji used to make. His hand movements used to resemble scissors or Kainchi in Hindi. 

It was like cutting all the confusion and obstacles from the lives of the devotees. 

I also felt the same at Kainchi Dham.

It was 2015, and everything was at a standstill for me. Also, there was a lot of confusion in my head. I heard about Kainchi Dham from my friend and decided to visit it. 

I visited Kainchi Dham, and the first feelings were of comfort and spiritual bliss as I approached the temple. However, the magic happened when I visited the cave where Baba used to meditate. It was around 5 km away from the Kainchi Dham. Very few people know about this cave. So, it remains mostly vacant. 

I entered the cave and sat there. I felt a different kind of energy and suddenly started feeling warm. And there was a faint whisper, I am not sure whether it’s my conscience or the source of the voice!

“Trust in the path you’re on, and don’t be afraid of the unknown. Everything will unfold as it should.”

It was one moment, and it cut off all the anxiety and confusion. I knew what I had to do to move forward in my life, and I got a new sense of purpose. 

Not drawing parallels here. However, 2015 was also the year when Mark Zuckerbag visited the Kainchi Dham ashram. He was facing some issues with his company at the same time. 

All the problems got resolved after his visit to the Ashram. So, Kainchi Dham makes us believe in the power of miracles made possible by love and compassion.

What Is The History Of The Neem Karoli Baba Temple? Why Is Baba Neem Karoli Mandir Famous?

Maharaj Ji started building his first temple in the early 1950s. He named it Hanumangarh and built it on the Manora hillside. 

The famous Kainchi Dham and Hanuman Mandir were built in 1964. Over the next two decades, multiple ashrams and temples were built. The devotees of Neem Karoli Baba also visit the following places. 

• Kakrighat
• Kanpur
• Lucknow
• Shimla
• Delhi

All these ashrams were special, not because of the spiritual fervor alone. As a woman, I had a special feeling because Maharaj Ji took note of the limitations faced by the women of India. He made special facilities available for them in the Ashram. So, the thought of “Sab Ek” is also reflected in his socially aware and inclusive activities. 

No wonder that many women found their Guri, son, brother, and father in Maharaj Ji. 

Furthermore, the visitors are fed, and they can carry Prasad home. The ascetics visiting the ashrams get blankets and food. All the acts here are an extension of Baba’s speech, “If you do not empty the stock, how can it be replenished?”

Baba Neem Karoli’s ashrams and temples also teach us how you can be on the path of spirituality despite being a householder. He played the role of a saint and a householder simultaneously. In his role as a householder, he had a daughter and two sons. 

Where Is Neem Karoli Baba Mandir Located?

You can visit these temples and ashrams of Neem Karoli Baba.

1. Hanuman Ghadi

The Hanuman Ghadi temple was the first one to be established by Neem Karoli Baba in 1951, and the consecration of the Hanuman statue was done in 1952. 

Located at the top of a ridge, this temple offers wonderful views of Nainital City and Naini Lake. It is just 2 km away from Nainital. 

2. Neem Karoli Baba Ashram Kainchi Ashram

Neem Karoli Baba Mandir Nainital is actually located in Kainchi, a place around 38 km away from Nainital. The Bhandara on 15th June is the major festival here, and lakhs of devotees visit the temple around this season. 

Nestled in the Kumaon Hills, the Ashram and temple look beautiful with gardens. It has an ashram where I stayed. It cost me INR 200 per day. 

However, accommodations are limited. So, you have to make prior arrangements. 

3. Delhi Ashram

The Delhi Ashram has two schools and a hospital. It feeds the school children every day, and it has the second biggest Annapoorna Mandir in India. 

The ashram also has a large dairy or Gaushala, which was inaugurated in 2001. 

4. Paniki Hanuman Temple

Paniki Hanuman Temple was inaugurated in 1964, and this small temple is located near the Paniki Railway Station on the outskirts of Kanpur. 

There is a story that Maharaj Ji fed the whole city of Kanpur at the Bhandara of the inauguration ceremony. 

After the Bhandara at the Vrindavan temple, a Mahasamadhi Bhandara is held here. This temple does not have any accommodation. 

5. Rishikesh Ashram

Located in the south of Rishikesh, the Rishikesh Ashram stands out with its 45-foot Hanuman Murti greeting the visitors. You will get to see the Hanuman idol while entering Rishikesh from Haridwar. 

The highlight of the temple is the library, where you will find resources on spiritual knowledge. The temple has morning and evening artis. 

Furthermore, there are some weekly events in this ashram. 

• Sundarkand: Tuesdays at 4 PM
• Hanuman Chalisa: Tuesday Morning to Wednesday Morning
• Bajrang Baan: Saturdays from Morning to Evening

6. Neem Karoli Baba Temple Vrindavan

The Neem Karoli Baba Temple in Vrindavan is another example of how Maharaj Ji believed in oneness. When the temple here was completed, he chose Bhavani Singh, a non-Brahmin, to be the priest here. 

He even called in a pundit to teach the boy about the rituals of puja, and he asked Bhavani Singh to buy Tulsi beads and a sacred thread from the market. 

Today, the Vrindavan Ashram, along with the Hanuman Ji temple, also has a Gaushala, the Vrindavaneshwari Maa Temple, a Gaushala, Yagyashala and Mahadev Temple, Kirtan Hall, Ram Darbar Temple, and the Maha Samadhi Mandir of Neem Karoli Maharaj. 

7. Shree Hanuman Mandir, Bhumiyadhar

Bhumiyadhar Ashram in the Kumaon Hills is located near Kainchi Dham. This temple is located in the locality of Harijans (lower Hindu caste), and it is said that he chose this place for building the temple for the welfare of the local people. 

The Hanumanji temple here was built, and an idol of Hanuman Ji was brought here in 1965. 

8. Shree Kakrighat Dham 

Kakrighat Dham Ashram is located around 22 km away from Kainchi Dham. The place was associated with the Himalayan Monk, Shri Somvaree Maharaj. 

Shri Siddhi Ma, the direct disciple of Neem Karoli Baba, decided to restore the old Shiva temple here and the site where Shri Somvaree Maharaj used to worship. 

Further, the Hanuman Temple built here rekindled the memory of Shri Somvaree Maharaj. 

9. Taos Hanuman Temple

Nestled in the Sangre de Christo (Blood of Christ) Range of the Rocky Mountains, the Taos Hanuman Temple is a popular Hindu pilgrimage center.

The mode of transport, travel duration, and cost will depend on the Karoli Baba Ashram or Mandir you will visit. 

I visited the Neem Karoli Baba Ashram in Kainchi. Kathgodam is the nearest railway station to this temple, and it is located at a distance of 38 km. I took the Ranikhet Express from Delhi to Kathgodam, and the travel time was around 6 hours. 

I took a shared cab from Kathgodam Railway Station to Kainchi Dham.

However, you can also take a flight to the Pantnagar Airport, located at a distance of 70 km, and travel the remaining distance by road. 

In addition, from Delhi, Kainchi Dham is a 6-7-hour journey by road.

There are many miraculous stories of Neem Karoli Baba. However, my favorite story is the one behind the tradition of offering blankets to Maharaj Ji.

Maharajji once reached the house of an elderly couple in Fatehgarh. They offered Baba Ji dinner, a cot, and a blanket to sleep. They slept near the cot of Maharaj Ji. 

However, they found that Baba Ji was in discomfort throughout the night. The next morning, he asked the couple to take the blanket and release it into the Ganges without opening it. The blanket became heavy like iron when it fell into the water. 

After a month, the couple’s son, a soldier in the British Army who had served in World War II, returned home. All of his comrades were dead in a battle about a month ago, but a single bullet did not hit him. 

The couple recalled how Neem Karoli Baba came to their house and was uncomfortable throughout the day. It was his divine intervention that saved their son’s life. 

So, today, blankets are offered at Neem Karoli Baba Temple and Ashram to get rid of all the difficulties in life. 

Why Is Neem Karoli Baba Called Lord Hanuman Himself? 

Maharaj Ji instructed his devotees not to enter the cave when he was meditating or without asking him. However, Gopal, a bird-catcher and an ardent follower, once by mistake entered the cave and saw Maharaj Ji in a meditative state with serpents surrounding him. 

Many also say that Maharaj Ji was a few feet above the ground, defying the rule of gravity. Gopal was terrified seeing this form of Maharaj Ji, and he ran outside the cave and fainted. Then, Baba came out and, with his single touch, Gopal regained consciousness. 

Since then, it is believed that as Hanuman Ji saved the life of Lakshmana, Babaji saved Gopal’s life.

On weekends, my friends would visit nearby villages, including Panbu village – it would take less than 2 hours to drive to the viewpoint from Homes, and it was a popular spot for townies to disappear at the time. 

Once school was over, and we decided to take a trip, my friends immediately suggested Panbu Dara Viewpoint. On my first trip to Panbu Dara, I was floored – the beautiful Kanchenjunga, the meandering Teesat river, the Coronation Bridge, and the dense forests made up the view. 

Since then, I have gone back four times – each time I fall in love with this lesser-known viewpoint, located 5500 feet above sea level. So, if you have been looking for an offbeat destination, then you can add Panbu Dara to your list!

How To Reach Panbu Dara From Darjeeling?

Wherever you are residing in the country or outside, it is most convenient to reach the NJP (New Jalpaiguri) station and hire a private or shared car to Darjeeling. If you are new to the area, you must spend at least two days in Darjeeling before visiting the surrounding regions. 

The first time I visited the Panbu Dara Viewpoint, I was floored by the mesmerizing views of tranquil villages, lush tea gardens, and the Kanchenjunga range. 

Moreover, this excellent offbeat spot is only a short drive from nearby cities in North Bengal. Yep! By road, Panbu Dara is 25 Kms from Darjeeling – it takes you 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach. 

You can rent a private car, which will cost between ₹2500 and ₹3000, or you can opt for a shared jeep. Personally, I have always opted for shared cars because they cost much less—approximately ₹500/person. So, you can easily book two seats for yourself and pay ₹1000 if you don’t want to sit too close to someone random – I’ve done it multiple times and it works! 

You will start from Darjeeling and cross Jorebungalow, Ghoom, 3rd Mile, and Lamahatta before reaching Panbu Dara. However, shared jeeps can only go to Lamahatta post, which you have to hike for the next 1 km uphill through prayer flags and pine forests to reach Panbu Dara.

Also, if you want to skip Darjeeling and reach the location directly from the NJP station or the Bagdogra Airport, it is possible. It will take you less than 2 hours by private car to travel the 38 km to the viewpoint. The expenses are similar or a little more. 

Are There Homestays Near Panbu Dara Viewpoint?

Yes. There are multiple homestays close to the Panbu Dara Viewpoint. In fact, you will find some of these homestays at the viewpoint, while some are located at Panbu, the nearby village. 

The best part? Options here range from homestays with standard rooms and shared bathrooms to comfortable villas with great views. Also, most homestays here serve home-cooked meals with local ingredients that taste delicious, especially during the winter months.

We stayed at Kavya Homestay at the viewpoint itself. This cozy homestay offers 360° views of the mountains and the surrounding beauty. Plus, it was super affordable, costing us only ₹1500/night for each room. 

Since I was sharing a room with a friend, I had to pay only ₹750 per night. The food was certainly a highlight of this homestay, and we were happy to indulge in the warm, home-cooked, local meals. And we had simply gotten their contact number on the internet and called them to book our rooms. 

So, you can dial +91 8826764206 and confirm your room. However, you will have to pay a 50% advance to confirm your booking. 

This is the closest homestay in the area. Apart from Kavya Homestay, I have a few other recommendations from the nearby area:

1. Lama Dara Homestay, Samether Khasmahal, is 11.1 kms away from the viewpoint, but it was my next best option. With a 4.2 rating on Google, you can definitely call them (095471 51001) to discuss room availability and pricing.

2. Located in the village of Panbu, Green Wood Homestay offers rooms that have large windows for guests to enjoy beautiful views. With a 4.5 rating on Google, you can check this place out if you love boutique cottages and serene stays. To call them, just dial 090647 47925. 

Are There Any Local Eateries Near Panbu Dara Viewpoint?

Much like Ahaldara Viewpoint, Panbu Dara is yet another offbeat location in North Bengal, and lacks any commercial restaurants or food courts. Moreover, the focus for such destinations is typically on the scenic natural setting. And building commercial restaurants will kill the vibe of such spots. 

As a result, you have to depend on simple (but delicious) homemade food served by homestays and local snack stalls. These snack stalls near the viewpoint serve wai wai, momos, tea, and coffee. Moreover, when you are here, try out the home-style curries, typically made with fresh vegetables and local ingredients.

Also, it is best to confirm your meals with the homestay you are staying at in advance. For instance, when we had the morning tea, I took the initiative to discuss the lunch and dinner options. 

If you want to have chicken curry or other non-veg items, then it’s best to inform your homestay in the morning. Otherwise, due to the remote location of the viewpoint, accessibility is low here, but informing earlier gives enough time to the homestay staff to prepare your food. 

Is Photography Allowed At Panbu Dara Viewpoint?

Yes, you can take a photo for personal reasons at the Panbu Dara Viewpoint and the surrounding region, including the homestays. 

However, for doing any commercial photography, you need a written permit from the relevant government authorities. In addition, it is possible that you might have to pay a certain fee. Also, while taking photos, be mindful of the local community and respect everyone’s privacy. 

What Are The Best Times For Photography At Panbu Dara Viewpoint?

Panbu Dara Viewpoint offers spectacular panoramic views. So, if you are planning your visit in October or November, you can capture clear views of the mountains and skies. This season is best for capturing striking views of the beautiful Mount Kanchenjunga.

Since this time comes right after we bid adieu to monsoon, there’s hardly any rainfall and haze, making it perfect for capturing crisp details in the panoramic scenery. Moreover, the blue and golden hours around sunset and sunrise offer the softest, warmest lights for landscape pictures. 

While I always discourage people from visiting hilly regions during the monsoon, I have been to this region during July last year! Luckily, it was a safe trip – the one thing that stood out was all the pictures we took! 

The misty mountains, the lush green forests, and the soft haze made for dramatic landscape pictures. Also, I loved the soft and diffused lighting, which only added to the quality of the pictures.

Yes. Generally, it is safe for families, couples, and solo travelers to visit Panbu Dara Viewpoint. Yep! It’s a tourist-friendly spot. Plus, as per recent news reports, the roads are clear.

However, you must avoid traveling to the region during the monsoon months – June to September. During the Monsoon, the area is prone to heavy rainfall and landslides. Moreover, while you are there, follow local rules to ensure an overall safe experience for everyone. 

On that note, I’ve laid out the four major safety issues that you should be aware of before visiting this region:

1. Landslides:

The entire Kalimpong District is very prone to heavy rainfall and landslides, particularly during the rainy months. During this time, roads are either submerged or blocked. So, it is best to avoid visiting the area during the monsoon.

2. Earthquakes:

While you think that earthquakes are rare, you will be shocked to know that the whole of Kalimpong district is located in the earthquake-prone seismic zone IV. So, it’s best to know how disaster management works in the region. If there’s an emergency, then follow the best practices of local emergency authorities.

3. Homestays:

If you are booking a homestay from an online platform, review all ther terms carefully before making any payments. The official website of Panbu Dara explicitly mentions that it is not accountable for any injury, damage, or loss incurred during your stay. 

4. Bad Roads:

The frequent flooding and landslides, thanks to the recent spate of unpredictable heavy rainfall, have only made the roads worse. So, while driving, be ready to encounter blockages, road closures, and potential detours. 

Visiting Panbu Dara Viewpoint? Best Travel Practices And Safety Tips:

Panbu Dara sure offers scenic views. But while you are visiting this viewpoint, take into account the rugged terrains, road conditions, and most importantly, the unpredictable weather. 

On that note, I’ve laid out some vital safety tips below (that have always kept me safe on mountains):

1. Always Keep Note Of The Weather:

Located in the Kalimpong region of West Bengal, Panbu Dara is a region prone to unpredictable weather conditions. Here, fluctuations are normal – a sunny day could easily become foggy in a matter of hours. 

So, it’s best to check the weather forecast before leaving your homestay – and be ready to face heavy rainfall, fog, or winds. Also, while visiting the viewpoint, it is likely that you will encounter heavy and freezing winds. So, be cautious when you are close to the edges and take care of your personal belongings. 

2. Carry Appropriate Footwear: 

This is literally true for all hilly areas – and Panbu Dara is no different! The terrain here is very uneven. 

And while you will spot stairs to reach the viewpoint, it’s hardly any good. This is why you need sturdy shoes that have a good grip. Your shoes are essential – without them, you can’t safely navigate this area. 

3. Supervise Kids:

If you are traveling with children, then don’t leave them alone anywhere – keep a close eye. This is especially applicable when you are close to the edges of the viewpoint due to its high elevation. 

4. Be Aware Of Your Surrounding Areas:

Again, this has always kept me safe in my solo trips! In crowded areas, hold onto your personal belongings – be vigilant about them and prevent theft. Moreover, when you are at the viewpoint, stay on the trail and avoid walking through any unmarked or steep slopes. 

Also, to be safe, consider going with a guide or a local driver, especially if you are not familiar with the region. That way, a local can make the trip more convenient, not to mention safer. 

5. Avoid Littering:

When you are traveling – especially to the mountains – avoid littering. Moreover, don’t dispose of your personal waste inappropriately in such areas. This will help to preserve the viewpoint’s natural beauty. Also, you could face fines for littering, so be careful.

The best time to visit Ahaldara is anytime between October and May. The weather is pleasant and clear, offering some of the best views of the surrounding region. 

Also, if you are looking forward to a nice winter in the hills, then plan your visit between December and February. However, do pack warm clothes since it tends to get really cold with temperatures falling to 5-6°C during daytime in January. 

In this context, it is also important to point out that you should avoid going to this viewpoint during the monsoon months. 

How To Reach Ahaldara From Darjeeling?

Wherever you are located in the country (or even outside), it is best to reach New Jalpaiguri (NJP) and take a car to Darjeeling. If you are not from anywhere close, I suggest spending at least two days in Darjeeling before visiting the surrounding regions, including Ahaldara.  

Located 45 to 50 kms from Darjeeling, Ahaldara is a perfect offbeat spot! The most convenient way to reach this beautiful location is by car. Yep! The best way to reach the location is by road – it will take you between 2 and 2.5 hours, depending on the conditions of the roads. 

You can either hire a private car, which will cost you ₹2500 – ₹3000, or you can go for a shared jeep. 

Personally, I have always opted to share a jeep since it costs much less – approximately ₹500/person. So, you can easily book two seats for yourself and pay ₹1000 if you don’t want to sit too close to someone random – I’ve done it multiple times and it works!

It is a beautiful journey that will take you through mountain bends, tea gardens, and pine forests. You will start from Darjeeling and cross Jorebungalow, Ghoom, and Latpanchar before reaching Ahaldara.

However, if you want to reach Ahaldara directly from NJP, then you can get a private car or shared taxi – it will take you 3 hours and cost you a little above 3K in a private car. But the rate for shared cabs will remain the same.  

Additionally, Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport, and it is 65 Kms away from Ahaldara – you can take a shared taxi or private cab from here as well.

Personally, I have been staying at homestays in Darjeeling and the surrounding areas, including the villages on the Sandakphu trail, for years. 

So, when we planned a trip to Ahaldara, we knew we were going to stay in homestays – the home-like, comforting environment always makes up for being a home away from our homes in the plains. 

Relatively offbeat till now, Ahaldara is yet to become a tourist hotspot buzzing with fancy boutique hotels. However, there are some homestays close to the viewpoint, mostly in the Sittong region, with different amenities like home-cooked meals, guided treks, and mountain views. 

Additionally, you will find options ranging from modern to traditional-style rooms with certain properties featuring useful amenities like attached toilets, hot water, and campfires. 

How Can I Book A Stay Near Ahaldara View Point?

For anxious and specifically first-time travelers, it is best to book homestays through online travel sites like Stayfar and FusionStays. 

On that note, I have mentioned three websites you can check out for accommodation in Ahaldara:

However, if you travel frequently like me, then it’s best to contact the homestay of your choice directly and book rooms. You can easily find contact details on hotel listing platforms like Justdial or directly from Google Business. 

If you are traveling during peak tourist seasons like Summer and Spring, it’s best to call and check if rooms are available. Also, if you are reserving a room directly, then you should be ready to pay a 50% advance to confirm your room. 

Additionally, you can also check Instagram. For example, I found Deoja Forest Stay on Instagram and sent them a message on the platform itself. We exchanged numbers, and I was able to reserve a room directly without any fuss or platform fee – it’s cheaper to book directly. 

Also, you can consider booking rooms in nearby areas such as Sittong or Latpanchar. That way, you can plan a visit to this beautiful viewpoint during sunset or sunrise. 

The Best Homestays Near Ahaldara View Point:

We stayed at Aahaldara Paradise Homestay. This homestay offers standard rooms and has its own barbecue area for cozy outdoor feasts. 

Plus, the views from the homestay were stunning. Also, I enjoyed the home-cooked meals at the homestay – you should definitely try the Chicken Curry here! Just dial 093828 95277 and book your room with them, if you are already convinced! 

Apart from my prime recommendation, there are two other good homestays near the viewpoint that you can definitely check out:

1. Sunrise Viewpoint Homestay, Aahaldara (4.7 Stars | 470+ Google Reviews) – ₹1350 to ₹1600/Night.
2. Humro Home Ahaldara (4.4 Stars | 827 Google Reviews) – prices can vary for direct bookings. 

What Wildlife Can Be Spotted Around Ahaldara View Point?

Since Ahaldara is located within the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, you will find different bird species and mammals. 

The most common sightings here include leopards, barking deer, wild boars, and black bears. If you are lucky, you can spot elusive animals like the Indian Bison and Royal Bengal Tiger. 

Moreover, this spot is a birdwatcher’s paradise, considering the region is home to more than 240 species, like the scarlet minivet, rufous-necked hornbill, and different woodpeckers and sunbirds. 

On that note, here’s a list of birds you are most likely going to see here:

Are There Any Local Eateries Near Ahaldara View Point?

Yes. Ahaldara is a calm, offbeat spot that doesn’t have any food courts or commercial restaurants. So, your entire dining experience will depend on what local homestays and shacks serve on a day-to-day basis. 

Near the viewpoint and close to the parking area, you will find small stalls and shacks that sell local snacks, tea, and candies. Being a momo person, I almost always indulge in momos at local shacks. Also, ditch Maggi and switch to Wai Wai when you are in the hills – these instant noodles are delicious. 

Moreover, the food you will get here will often feature locally-sourced and organic ingredients. For me, the taste of local and regional cuisines is always a priority. 

TBH, I read about a local pork curry called ‘Bongur ko Masu’, usually cooked with ‘Rai’ leaves (a local leafy veggie) on Tripadvisor. So, when I reached Ahaldara, I made it a point to try this out – the best part? Just enquire at the reception of your homestay, and you can get it made for dinner.

Not really. 

Generally, I avoid traveling to the mountains during the monsoon, though I find Darjeeling very beautiful during the rainy months. But the recent surge in landslides and the subsequent road closures have made it a complete no-no to travel to these regions. 

Moreover, you can hardly experience the viewpoint in its entirety during the monsoon since everything around you will be lost in the low-hanging clouds and fog. So, even if the landscape is scenic and lush in the monsoon, the overall experience is usually impacted negatively by the rainy weather. 

To make things easier, I’ve laid out the primary safety concerns below:

• Landslides: Heavy rainfall in Darjeeling and adjoining hilly areas causes landslides and makes the travel routes inaccessible. 

• Road Closures: The roads are too dangerous to navigate due to heavy rains and unpredictable landslides. This is particularly true for spots like Ahaldara that are located on hilltops. 

• Obscure Views: This one’s perhaps the most heartbreaking issue. The fog and clouds end up hiding the entire Kanchenjunga range, including the surrounding mountains. 

• Lack Of Tourist Activities: If the weather is not good, then it will end up limiting outdoor activities in the region. Moreover, the main attraction here is the panoramic view, which is most likely hidden behind the clouds.

When you are traveling to the mountains, it is always crucial to be safe and respectful – if you don’t respect nature, nature will surely show you why it is imperative to do so. And I’m not even kidding – never joke about safety when it comes to mountains and adjoining hilly areas. 

Darjeeling, and in this case specifically Ahaldara, is no different. In this context, I have laid down some vital safety tips below:

1. Be Mentally Prepared About The Roads:

The roads, including the trails, are going to be narrow. So, it’s not going to be a comfortable ride entirely – it’s best to be ready for a bumpy ride to the viewpoint. 

2. Carry Appropriate Footwear:

Please don’t make the mistake of carrying your regular footwear to the hills. For starters, ditch all open-toe shoes, including sandals and flip flops. Any shoes you wear here have to be covered – you need shoes that are strong to withstand bad roads. 

3. Carry Your Essentials:

There are a few shops in this area. As a result, it is better that you carry your own snacks, medicines, and anything else that you might need during your stay. 

4. Carry Cash:

Ahaldara View Point is a cash-only establishment. As a result, you won’t find any facilities for debit, credit, or other digital payments. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates many buses from Bengaluru to Gokarna Bus Stand.

Around 140 km away from Gokarna, Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is the most fascinating place I visited on this journey. The best place to visit in Dandeli, this sanctuary is ideal for jungle safaris. I spotted some deer, bison, leopards, and wild boars. 

The safari here takes around 3-4 hours. So, if you have a plan to join the safari, you will have to make adjustments to your travel plans.

Like Gokarna, the Murudeshwar Temple is one of the Pancha Kshetras or the five holiest places of Karnataka. The distance between these two places is around 80 km, and the travel time is between 1 hour and 30 minutes and 2 hours. 

If you have the time for a longer detour, you can even visit the Jog Falls in Shimoga District. It is around 90 km away from Murudeshwar Temple, and it is one of the most famous waterfalls in Asia. 

In addition, the Yana Caves are around 53 km away from Gokarna. Yana Caves are important as an ecotourism destination, and they have massive limestone rock formations. 

In addition, the Yana Caves are home to a Swayambhu Shiva Lingam, and it is associated with the story of Lord Shiva and Bhasmasura.

Now, these speculations and jokes about the dream Rameshwaram Airport are not something born out of thin air. By mid-2025, there will have been at least three instances when the proposals and discussions about the Rameshwaram Airport have been in the news. 

• 14th March 2025: Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu announces that the Rameshwaram Area will have a new airport. 

• 23rd July 2025: The Tamil Nadu Government identifies five sites for the development of the Rameshawaram Airport. 

• 30th August 2025: Keelakarai and Uchipulli get shortlisted for the development of the Rameshwaram Airport.

Madurai Airport, located approximately 177 km away, is the nearest airport to Rameshwaram. The travel time by road is close to 3 hours. 

Madurai Airport is one of the busiest airports in Tamil Nadu, and according to a Times of India Report, it received 1,16,539 passengers in January 2025. These numbers were 45% more than in January 2024. 

Furthermore, the Madurai Airport remains busy during the festive seasons of the year, starting from October to January. Also, early morning and evening timings, especially between 4 and 7 PM, are the busiest times of the day in the airport. 

So, if you don’t get a ticket to fly to the Madurai Airport, you need to know your other options. Here is a detailed list.

Two trains depart from Madurai Junction to Rameshwaram. Madurai Junction is located at a distance of 13 km from the Madurai Airport. The travel time for the same is around 30 minutes.

Moreover, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has just launched a Bharat Gaurav Tourist Train Package. Known as the Rameswaram-Tirupati Dakshin Darshan Yatra, this package will cover all the major pilgrimage sites in South India. 

This 9-Day and 10 Night journey will begin from Tirupati and will then take you to Rameshwaram, Madurai, Kanyakumari and Thiruvananthapuram. The journey will begin on 7th November 2025 and end on 16th November 2025. 

The ticket prices for adults start at ₹18,040, and for children, the starting price is ₹16,890.
